This summer ends with an almost sweet taste. I’m almost done with the University but I don’t want to brag until I have the signed paper on my hands. New (almost) things rise on the horizon. Let’s hope this year hands out some miracles at last. A lot of work happened the last months and a lot more is awaiting me on the corner.

I’m conceptually working on some sites these days and on some web applications and trying to keep a low profile until I have publishable data

I fail to bring matters to a closure lately. Once more my mind is drifting. Maybe it’s the summer, maybe it’s the moody weather that suddenly fell over Thessaloniki. Maybe it’s some bad karma/mojo my star sign is passing through. On the other side as a side-effect I am highly focused on anything that hasn’t got to do with my deeds. I even fixed the plumbing yesterday at home. It almost feels like I need some escape (-mechanism?). Voices from the past tried the last months to reach me but I don’t see the point anymore. I’m full of their bull* anyway and who needs chicks with a reality distortion field anymore? Some others on the other side aren’t as it seems. After a tiresome wedding weekend things seem to cool down (or not) in a strange way. I need a quick dirty fix and time is eluding me. I’m pretty much at the point in Dr. House where he realizes he needs the puzzle as a quick fix after he stays clear from Vicodin for three months and although all know he solves the puzzle nobody tells him about it.

Flash! (not Gordon)

I’ve always wanted to experiment with flash but the slow versions available on Mac OS X were always a mess. Not to mention the tools. Since Flex was released as open source and the sdk was split from the IDE the situation changed. Now with the release of Flash 10.1 the plugin starts to be workable again. With 10.1 the video sites don’t crash the plugin so easily (less than 1% probability now) and the performance has gone up a bit too since they started using better technologies like Core Animation. I’ve re-installed Flex IDE on my Mac and Flex sdk 3.5 for now. I’m playing a bit with Flixel. Last time I checked (about a week ago) they had stable releases but now all you’ll find is the github link and broken documentation (besides the autogenerated API that is). All in all this tiny library supports blitting and bypasses the regular vector drawing mode. A bunch of games are already using it although in most cases the developers are high school kids. This doesn’t mean the library is less than professional. The library is more than one needs to start away with flash game development, although you’ll need external obfuscators (like mochi) and other libraries for social networking. For the time being I am experimenting with the demos (the only relevant sample code there is) and want to run some benchmarks. I will try to post them here and at the project forums for the community.

Thinking of going alone for a while. I am very annoyed of situations close to me and have to make some bold moves. Tomorrow will be a day to meet at least an on old friend and see how it goes but I am really thinking of getting offline for a while. No harm done I guess.

Tomorrow something big is supposedly coming to the world. From Apple Inc of course. Many years ago people started speculating on the Apple “iPad”. A “revolutionary” computing tablet. There is nothing revolutionary at Apple. There never was. It is evolution that is taking place!

In the design and computing industries there are many forces trying to compete with each other in order to find the next big thing. In most cases they all fail. Apple has managed through all these years, especially after the “comeback” of Steve Jobs to stay ahead of the competition. The solution to being ahead is not to produce revolutionary products but to evolve and re-iterate until the final product feels flawless from all aspects.

Apple so far has managed to pull many surprises on the design sector. The same counts for the end user experience. In order to deliver you need to listen and research. Creating something because YOU like it doesn’t mean that the whole world will too.

During the last 3 years and after the iPhone research team produced the end product there was much speculation on what Apple will come forward with. In the last 24 months there was an outbreak of rumors of epic proportions. The last 12 months all hell broke loose. So what IS coming?

Apple is selling pro and consumer products on the axis of software solutions. The big companies buy the expensive pro suites but the real money comes from the consumers. The last update to the iLife suite brought face recognition and geospatial metadata to your media. A dare move almost two years before other companies had market-ready products. Last year Apple wanted to dedicate developer resources to cloud computing and storage and bought some related small-sized companies too. If we only had this then tomorrow would be the day the cloud computing was born for consumers. The day that iLife and iWork, together, as an office and home productivity suite started living on the same cloud. And us the users enjoying the view from any computing device on the world. Including the iPhone. If MobileMe was documents to take away tomorrow your apps would be to take away. And together with a special version of the AppleStore, more developers might be able to sell cloud applications for pennies.

But this is not the case. Jobs in an interview confessed that when the hardware exists they will unleash the real deal to the consumers. But that was on the OS X 10.4 era. With 10.6 they managed to move forward by pushing the boundaries of optimization and letting the hardware finally do some work. Since 10.6 developers are rallying to compute more and more stuff in order to get ready for the 10.7 era. 10.7 is coming sometime in 2011. The most realistic date is September 2011 and it will have to show what at least Apple can do with the technology innovations they introduced with 10.6. But what happens till then?

The hardware to produce the Apple iPad is already here long time ago. The iPhone was only the testbed for the new era on the hardware. Recent revelations introduced us to a new processing unit capable of doing much more than Intel or AMD are able to do with only a tiny fraction of the energy they require to do so. And is leading as the only one being able to use all this juice. 10.6 and iPhoneOS 3.x was the first to benefit from this research. iPhoneOS 3.x is based on 10.4 but it combines technologies from 10.6.

In the next days the iPhone will become the entry level on computing for consumers, bringing technology to the illiterate. A new computing device will take the place between the iPhone and the computer. This is what at least the mass of speculations realize. The device is supposedly based on iPhoneOS 4.x which will come sometime after the summer and will bring new features to the (now old) iPhone devices. More services for the consumers. Probably the ability for some lucrative developers to host their apps on the cloud too, but this will come after September with demos this summer at the already sold out WWDC 2010.

The new device won’t do much of the computing we are used to do on the desktop computers but it will be able to cope with everyday computing needs of the masses. That means web connectivity, archiving, browsing and publishing of personal media like photos and videos. The ability to store them online and edit them on the cloud. The computing to edit offline is already here but for the final touch the tasks will probably be pushed on the cloud. Syncing with the iPhone and the computers should be a child’s play and social networking services will start booming on the device. Media consuming (newspapers, tabloids, magazines) will of course be included on the package since it’s already possible through the AppleStore and Apple proved that they can deliver. The same counts for off-the-cloud apps (off- and online).

The iPad itself won’t be sold before the summer but users will have a first preview tomorrow if God (Steve) permits. The price should be around 800-1100, with a sweet spot being at 999 $ and an introduction first edition at 1200 with the second version next year at 999$.

We have less than 24 hours from now. Grab some cola and popcorn and enjoy the show!

The start of a new era?

As of today 7PM i’m starting the NSFD officially. I want to see how long I can stand it. As far as I know the maximum so far recorded was 44 days. I don’t know if I will hold it that long but I wil try to do so at least for 20 days. I expect great results soon and thus an altered state of mind. Time will show.

This is not the first time I am trying the experiment. The last time I tried the results were astonishing. It’s already a very stressful period but I am hoping the best. I will try posting on fb every 24 hours milestone in the hope that I don’t loose faith in me. Others made it before me so it shouldn’t be that hard to convince myself. I will try to add some low bpm exercises later on to the schedule but for the first week I already have enough stress for now.

Is the sky broken after all?

I’ve always been fascinated by good design. Today I managed to watch “Objectified” and was again intrigued by it. Lately I find myself stumbling upon interior design images and I get sceptical weather I should start experimenting with some good interior design software. Time is of the essence for this semester though. So I guess time will tell!!!

Έχει εδώ και καιρό που χρειάζομαι ένα καλό hard-reset. Έχω συμπληρώσει 18ωρο χωρίς ίχνος ύπνου και με χάλια διατροφή. Το στομάχι μου πεινάει, πονάει και όμως νιώθω πως δεν χρειάζομαι ξεκούραση. Γύρω μου σκάει ο τζίτζικας και νιώθω δροσιά..

Ξεκίνησα σήμερα “την” παρουσίαση. Σήμερα το απόγευμα με τον και χτες ξέφυγε λίγο το μάτι μου σε μια περιοχή που καιρό έψαχνα αλλά δίσταζα να κινηθώ. Νιώθα αρκετά έτοιμος για το επόμενο βήμα πλέον. Ο Σεπτέμβριος είναι κοντά αλλά πρώτα προέχουν οι διακοπές του Αυγούστου σε “ερημικό” “νησί”. Μετά φόρτσα τα πανιά.

Με χαροποίησαν πάρα πολύ τα κακά μαντάτα από τον Πόλο. Όλα πάνε σκατά!.. Τέλεια! Είναι τρομερό πως γυρίζει ο τροχός. Ήμουν προφητικός από την αρχή, αλλά ζούμε σε μια εποχή που κοιτάμε τον προφήτη στα δόντια και όχι στα μάτια. Ας είναι. Έχουν γνώση οι φύλακες…

Το 2009 (φτού, να μην το ματιάξω) φαίνεται πως είναι μπήκε καλά και συνεχίζει να πηγαίνει καλύτερα. Από Οκτώβριο που θα βελτιωθούν και τα οικονομικά εκθετικά θέλω να βάλω 2 πραγματάκια στη σειρά.

MacBook heating problems (solved)

Recently I fell into trouble with my White MacBook. It was heating beyond 80 degrees Celcious and at the same time the fan was rotating at 6200 rpm. I bought a cannister of compressed air to try and blow anything that might be stuck in the fan but instead the fan stopped working!

So I opened the MacBook myself since it was already after midnight and cleared the fan from the inside. The MacBook now runs fine and rotates at 3000 rpm with <50C (quite cool since the ambient temperature is 35C) with a movie playing and NNW & Mail running at the background.

I just installed a new plugin to my wordpress installation. Now the whole site is accessible in an iPhone-manner for iPhone/iPod Touch users. The theme is different for them only, so you won’ see any changes unless you have one of those devices. It comes with AJAX previews/comments/login etc etc. I used the iPhone Simulator to check it out and so far it seems very primising. If you are interested for your own site then try a search for “WPTouch”.

I noticed my wordpress installation take some time to send the whole page so I decided to look into it. I disabled all plugins and started testing using http://webpagetest.org which is a service provided by AOL (?). It supposedly downloads the page and breaks down the data to graphs etc in order to find optimization techniques missed. It’s very easy to use and provides a third party test ground. I could also use Safari’s build-in tools but I wanted to see what’s happening outside my own network.

MacBook Freezes…

I don’t know why but I notice that my MacBook freezes. The same happened with 10.4 so it’s not a 10.5 issue I guess although it could be a kernel lockup on the Intel generation (not that ppc didn’t have 10 times as many). Sometimes everything seems to lockup but the clock continues to work and so do many other elements on screen. But clicks etc only calll their special friend… the spinning death (beach) ball and after some hours all resumes as if nothing happened. Some other times though it won’t come back from limbo and needs a hard reset…

I am slowly preparing my external HD for a Leopard installation with many disk tools in case anything happens (god forbid)…

Late night working…

It?s one of those times you find yourself working late at night doing work you should have done ages ago, cleaning up stuff etc etc.. I think I am slowly gaining ground on my effort to resume work on my projects.

On Friday I met with pkarage. A friend and an old colleague of mine at the AUTH NOC. We seem to have lots of common interests and will try to do some work together in the near future. I am quite happy because of this development.

I finally got GeekTool working again on Leopard and I found a way to modify the OS theme. Not that I didn?t like it. The most notable difference is the desktop background but this had to change after such a long time anyhow.

I find myself following traces of people erased from my head long time ago. I should delete the last traces of them once and for all. After all they only harmed and continue to do so unknowingly.
Speaking of following I started using twitter finally. Tweetdeck is the culprit but the application is still fugly. I found a better one called Pwitter but it won?t seem to work so I stay with Tweetdeck for now.

My desktop finally became uncluttered with a heavenly background and I find myself quite happy in it. But mostly because tomorrow my other half comes to town and we get to spend some time together. I only hope the weather stays as good as it was today.

I unsubscribed from some twitter feeds. The rate of garbage people put on their feeds is sometimes immense. Without Macgicasland I have way less noise now and am quite happier

Lack of storage space leads to fragmentation…

The process is quite simple. You write again and again in a small empty partition and you need to move data too quickly losing access and transfer time. The files don’t fit and have to be split, leading to fragmentation. This is in complete analogy with our own minds.

“I have too much on my mind lately to do this too”, “I need time”, “I need my space” (not myspace ), “I need to sleep over it”.

These are all processes that are triggered once space is full and we need to make more available in order to process events faster or better.

In my case I need lots of storage space. I am already over the 4.5TB mark and need space to breathe, backup my OS HD etc etc. Leaving data on my iPod 5.5g is not an option and they tiny 80GB external drive is also built for use and not storage. Tape drives are way to slow and DVD’s tend to corrupt data over time if left unattended. I need to store space once and forget about it in a safetly vault. And for the time being this is only possible using HD’s. the biggest HD I own so far is a 500GB drive. WD and Seagate announced availability of 2TB HD’s this month at about 300$ so i can see the future close. I might need to buy at least one more HD till then though (I buy my HD’s at approx. 100 euros each no matter the storage space).

None of that would be an issue though if Valentine’s day wasn’t close so I guess I will have to bite a bit more untill I get some spare cash.

Ξεκίνησε το 2009 πριν από ελάχιστες μέρες με τον πιο όμορφο τρόπο. Μετά από μια σύντομη εξόρμηση στον Π. Παντελεήμονα με την πιο όμορφη παρέα νιώθω αρκετά πιο συγκροτημένος πλέον. Για τη νέα χρονιά έχω περιορίσει τους στόχους μου σε ελάχιστους όπως να ξεμπερδέψω με τη σχολή ως το καλοκαίρι, να τελειώσουμε το project με τον kmak καθώς και να βρώ επιτέλους τι θα γίνει με το θέμα της διαμονής, αν θα παραμείνω Θεσσαλονίκη ή αν θα φύγω για εκτός Ελλάδος από το Σεπτέμβριο. Τέλος έχει μείνει ένα θεματάκι με κάποια κιλάκια που θέλω να χάσω ως το καλοκαίρι το αργότερο οπότε το 6μηνο προβλέπεται αρκετά έντονο και δημιουργικό.

Βρέθηκα στη Λάρισα για τα Χριστούγεννα και κατέληξα σε 4ήμερη εξόρμηση. Είναι η 2η μέρα μου εδώ. Χτες πέρασα απλά καταπληκτικά ως τις 6 το πρωί και σήμερα ήρθε το επιστέγασμα μετά από έναν πρωινό καφέ στην πόλη. Βρίσκομαι μπροστά στο τζάκι και σε λίγο θα την πέσω για ύπνο. Αύριο θα είναι μεγάλη η μέρα και ακόμη μεγαλύτερη η νύχτα (μάλλον)… Τελικά υπάρχουν ακόμη άτομα που με εκπλήσσουν (με την καλή έννοια). Ο Δεκέμβριος του 2008 ήταν εντελώς αναπάντεχος. Ελπίζω μόνο να μην τελειώσει αυτό που ξεκίνησε τόσο καλά σύντομα.

Η κατάσταση στην Ελλάδα ίσως ήταν κάπως έκρυθμη την βδομάδα που μας πέρασε αλλά εξίσου έκρυθμη ήταν και η δική μου σε κάθε τομέα. Προγραμματισμένα ακυρώνονται και απρογραμμάτιστα πετυχαίνουν με τη μία. Κατάφερα όμως να κάνω λίγο *δουλειά* στο facebook. Η ανάστροφη ανάλυση ενός κοινωνικού δικτύου καθώς και η εύρεση μεθόδων για την εκμετάλλευσή του είναι μια αρκετά δύσκολη δουλειά ιδίως όταν δεν έχεις πρόσβαση ούτε στη δομή της βάσης ούτε στα απαιτούμενα λογικά διαγράμματα (hello.. ανάστροφη είπαμε…) . Επειδή όμως ο Αποστόλης είναι και γαμώ τα παιδιά κατάφερε να παρακάμψει αρκετούς από τους μηχανισμούς των (εξωτερικών) εφαρμογών του facebook. Το ηθικό δίδαγμα είναι πως το facebook είναι ασφαλές, όχι όμως κατά ανάγκη και οι εφαρμογές του. Αν έχετε σκοπό να γράψετε μια εφαρμογή για το facebook τουλάχιστον κάντε χρήση Ajax . Το μόνο καλό ήταν το ποσό που τελικά πληρώθηκα για την ανάλυση από το ίδιο το facebook αλλά και το bonus λόγω μεθοδολογίας.

Το κακό που 3ωσε όμως (μέσα στην ίδια βδομαδα) ήταν τελειωτικό και μετά από ενα μπουκαλάκι (απρογραμμάτιστου αλλά μετά καλής παρέας) Tanqueray ήρθε και το όνειρο χτες το βράδυ να με στείλει ΤΕΛΕΙΩΣ!… μήπως ..?… who knows.. είπαμε … τέρμα το τσιγκέλι!..
